The historic Autódromo Óscar y Juan Gálvez in Buenos Aires is undergoing major renovations. While the return of MotoGP in 2027 is already confirmed, the track could also reopen its doors to Formula 1 in the near future.
MotoGP has confirmed that it will return to Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, in 2027. The Grand Prix will take place at the historic Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez, which is currently undergoing updates to meet modern racing standards. This means that 2024 will be the final year of MotoGP at the Termas de Río Hondo circuit, as the current contract ends.
The Buenos Aires track last hosted MotoGP in the 1990s and has also seen races in the 1960s and 1980s. The return is big for Argentina, and according to Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta, the location offers both a great racing venue and strong ties to fans in the region.
But while MotoGP’s return is confirmed, many are now asking whether Formula 1 could also come back to Argentina. The Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez last appeared on the F1 calendar in 1998. Since then, there have been occasional talks, but nothing concrete. Now, with major upgrades planned and architect Hermann Tilke involved in the redesign, the chances seem more realistic than before.
The redevelopment project is being done in two stages. The first focuses on MotoGP, but the second is aimed at attracting Formula 1. The new layout is expected to be longer and more suitable for modern F1 cars. The goal is to reach the highest level of FIA circuit approval, which is needed for hosting a Grand Prix.
Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2025 and finish by early 2027. Improvements will include updated garages, new grandstands for up to 120,000 spectators, better drainage and safety features. Some sections of the old track will be preserved, keeping a connection to the circuit’s past.
Local interest in F1 remains strong, especially with rising Argentine talent Franco Colapinto being part of it now. His progress has sparked new enthusiasm among fans and officials. While Formula 1 has not made any official statements, the developments in Buenos Aires suggest that Argentina could become part of the calendar again in the near future.
