The Marina Bay Street Circuit has undergone major changes ahead of the 2024 F1 Singapore Grand Prix, including adding one more DRS zone.
Ahead of this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix, the FIA has introduced some last-minute adjustments to the Marina Bay street circuit. The venue has been a figure on the F1 calendar since 2008 and over the years, the circuit has undergone various adjustments, including last year's removal of Turns 16 to 19, replaced by a 400-meter straight.
The Singapore GP is the 18th round of the 2024 Formula 1 season and is prepared to offer a thrilling weekend under the lights. Following their close battle last week in Baku, fierce competition is anticipated between the top four teams - Mercedes, McLaren, Red Bull, and Ferrari.
The main change this year is that the track will feature more DRS zones. Previously, the circuit had three DRS zones, now the number has been increased to four to enhance overtaking opportunities. The addition of the extra DRS zone makes Singapore only the second venue on the F1 calendar after Albert Park in Australia to feature four DRS zones.
Newly from this weekend, drivers will be able to activate DRS between Turns 14 and 16. This will be the final DRS zone on the track, complementing the existing zones between Turns 19 and 1, 5 and 7, as well as 13 and 14.
Another challenge for drivers will be the newly resurfaced sections of the track. Pirelli, the tyre supplier, noted that resurfacing work has been done between Turns 3 and 9, 10 and 12, and 14 and 17, which should offer a smoother surface.
The Singapore Grand Prix is considered one of the most challenging races due to its high humidity, intense heat, and the tight, twisty nature of the Marina Bay street circuit, which will demand maximum concentration and physical endurance from the drivers this weekend.
