Formula 1 has confirmed that the Portuguese Grand Prix will return to the calendar in 2027 and 2028, with the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve hosting the race under a new two-year agreement.

Formula 1 has announced that the Portuguese Grand Prix will make its return in 2027, with Portimão confirmed as the host venue for at least two seasons. The agreement has been reached between Formula 1, representatives of the Portuguese government, and the management of the Algarve International Circuit.

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, commonly known as Portimão, last featured on the Formula 1 calendar in 2020 and 2021. Those races were added during the COVID-19 pandemic and quickly became popular among drivers and fans thanks to the circuit’s layout and racing quality.

Situated in southern Portugal’s Algarve region, the 4.6-kilometre circuit is known for its flowing design and dramatic elevation changes. The track places heavy demands on both drivers and cars, with blind crests, fast corners and a steep downhill approach into the final turn creating frequent opportunities for close racing.

Portugal’s link with Formula 1 stretches back more than six decades. The country first hosted a world championship Grand Prix in Porto in 1958, before later events at Monsanto and Estoril. Over the years, several iconic names have taken victory on Portuguese soil, including Stirling Moss, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell. Senna’s maiden Formula 1 win came at Estoril in 1985.

Portimão also holds recent significance in Formula 1 history. In 2021, Lewis Hamilton claimed his 92nd career victory at the circuit, breaking Michael Schumacher’s long-standing record for the most wins in the sport. Hamilton remains the only driver from the current grid to have won a Formula 1 race at Portimão, having also taken victory there in 2020.

"I’m delighted to see Portimão return to the Formula 1 calendar and for the sport to continue to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase. The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats," said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali in the press release.
