Ralf Schumacher believes the 2026 season should be the final one in Formula 1 for Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. The former Grand Prix winner feels both champions have already achieved everything in the sport and that it is time to make room for the next generation of drivers.
Ralf Schumacher believes Formula 1 could be approaching the end of an era, with both Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso facing renewed questions over how much longer they will remain on the grid.
Hamilton and Alonso are the two oldest drivers in the current field and, despite their vast experience and decorated careers, Schumacher thinks the time has come for both to consider stepping away after the 2026 season.
Although Hamilton has shown signs of improvement in his second year with Scuderia Ferrari, Schumacher does not expect the seven-time world champion to be able to match teammate Charles Leclerc consistently over a full campaign.
“Hamilton is in a better position again this year,” Schumacher said on Sky Deutschland’s Backstage Boxengasse podcast.
“But over the course of the season, he won’t stand a chance against Leclerc. It’s time and I have to say the same about Fernando Alonso: Hamilton and Alonso have had a wonderful time in Formula 1. But now it’s time for both of them to vacate their cockpits at the end of the year and give young people a chance,” the former F1 driver added.
Schumacher also pointed to Oliver Bearman as a driver who deserves an opportunity at Ferrari in the near future.
The British youngster has continued to impress with Haas F1 Team, building on the strong reputation he established during his debut season.
“And I also believe that, if he gets the chance, he’ll even pose a challenge to Charles Leclerc. I’m pretty sure of that. So I’d say he’s actually better," Schumacher suggested on Bearman.
