Audi has become the first Formula 1 manufacturer to take advantage of the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system, quietly introducing an updated power unit at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
Audi surprised much of the Formula 1 paddock after it emerged that the team had already introduced an upgraded power unit during the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix weekend.
The update followed the FIA's first assessment under the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) mechanism, a system designed to help manufacturers that are trailing their rivals in engine performance.
Following the Canadian Grand Prix, the FIA completed its initial evaluation of all power units and informed manufacturers of the results ahead of the Monaco weekend. Although questions were later raised by Red Bull Powertrains regarding aspects of the process, the FIA's findings remained valid while further discussions continued.
While the publication of new power unit components ahead of the Barcelona race attracted little attention, Audi had in fact installed revised internal combustion engines and turbochargers in both of its cars.
According to reports, published by Autosport, the updated package was not focused on a significant increase in outright performance. Instead, the changes were aimed primarily at improving driveability and overall operating characteristics.
The speed with which Audi reacted has impressed many within Formula 1, suggesting that development work on the revised package had already been completed well before the FIA confirmed the ADUO results. Once approval was granted, the updated engines were quickly delivered to the track and put into service.
The Barcelona upgrade is understood to be only the beginning of a broader development plan, with Audi expected to continue refining its power unit throughout
