McLaren will trial its own version of the so-called “Macarena wing” at this weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, joining Ferrari and Red Bull in adopting the unusual inverted rear wing concept.
The Woking-based team will evaluate the upgrade during Friday practice at the Red Bull Ring as part of its ongoing development push in a key mid-season race weekend.
The system features a rotating upper rear wing element that flips into an inverted position on the straights, reducing drag and improving top speed while maintaining downforce through the corners.
Ferrari first introduced the idea during pre-season testing in Bahrain before racing it later in the season in Miami, where Red Bull also brought its own version to the track. The concept has since become one of the standout aerodynamic trends of the year, with multiple teams exploring similar solutions.
McLaren’s update arrives as part of a broader upgrade package in Austria, where Red Bull is also expected to introduce its second major development step of the season at its home circuit.
