Formula 1 Ferrari Charles Leclerc Lewis Hamilton 2026 F1 season

Timo Glock believes Ferrari must define clear rules between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc after several close fights between the team-mates in the early part of the 2026 season.

Ferrari’s two drivers have already been involved in multiple on-track battles this season, often running in close proximity and fighting directly for position.

In Australia, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished near each other after a tight race, while in China they went wheel-to-wheel and exchanged positions several times before Hamilton secured his first podium with the team. Another direct duel followed in Suzuka, where the pair again raced closely, this time with Leclerc finishing ahead.

The frequency of these internal fights has started to raise questions about whether Ferrari should manage the situation more carefully, especially as the team looks to close the gap to Mercedes.

Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve had already suggested that allowing such battles could be tactically damaging. Now, former F1 driver Timo Glock has shared a similar view, warning that Ferrari risks losing valuable results if the situation continues unchecked.

"The line should be drawn very clearly as soon as the team experiences a disadvantage. If the two get in each other's way and lose battery power, and the team ends up losing positions because of that, then the team management has to intervene," Glock told Sky DE.

"Ferrari really needs to take a clear stand, because this was already on the edge. Within the teams, the rule of thumb is: a duel is fine, but contact is absolutely not the intention. Hamilton is obviously trying to improve his position.Based on my feeling, I think that sooner or later we will see these two back in the gravel pit after a collision,“ former F1 driver added.

Ferrari has so far allowed both drivers to race freely, but the repeated duels highlight the potential risk of losing time, energy deployment, and ultimately positions in a tightly contested field.

Hamilton, meanwhile, appears to have made a step forward compared to his difficult 2025 season. His performance in China showed strong pace, while Leclerc continues to deliver consistent results across the opening races. Glock acknowledged the Briton’s improvement, but still sees Leclerc as slightly more consistent at this stage.

“Leclerc is still just a bit more consistently fast, but Hamilton is clearly back at the level where we all want to see him. He has confidence and fun in racing, even if the Brit wasn't as competitive in Japan as he was in China,” Glock concluded.
