Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reportedly joined the list of potential buyers for Otro Capital’s 24 percent stake in Alpine F1 Team, setting up a possible bidding battle with former Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who has showed interest before.

Alpine has been really opened about the 24 percent stake offer, as team’s executive advisor Flavio Briatore confirmed that former Red Bull CEO and boss Christian Horner is interested in the purchase earlier in January. It seems, that there are several potential buyers of the Otro Capital’s stake, joined in recent weeks by Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff.

Exact values of the bids have not been revealed, but some sources say that it could be around £600 million for Otro Capital’s 24 percent, as the bids would value Alpine around £2.5 billion. Three years ago, the company paid €200 million for the stake.

In documents referring to Otro Capital’s share has been revealed that there are some limitations placed on any potential sale. It would have to be proceeded with the approval of Renault, up until September 26. After this date, the company will have bigger control over the sale of its share, meaning that the bids of Horner and Wolff could become less attractive as Otro Capital is trying to maximise its return.

With all that, both Horner’s and Wolff’s bids are still quite considerable interest to Renault Group due to their connections, opportunities and big level of knowledge of the F1 world. Although, there is one factor which might play favour in Wolff’s chances. That is the already existing connection between Alpine and Mercedes as Alpine is using Mercedes’s power unit. That means that the purchase might be a benefit for both F1 teams.
