Former Red Bull CEO and team boss Christian Horner is reportedly in talks to buy a stake in the Alpine Formula 1 team.
Christian Horner was fired by Red Bull earlier this year, but he is eager to return to Formula 1. His departure in July ended a 20 year association with the team, during which he had become the central figure behind many of Red Bull’s most successful seasons. Despite being on gardening leave until April 2026, it has been widely reported that Horner wants to come back to the sport.
“It is no secret that Christian wants to return to Formula 1,” a source familiar with the situation told De Telegraaf. “He is looking for a role where he can really influence the team, not just follow instructions from a CEO.”
Horner has been linked with several teams in recent months, but he has specific requirements. He is said to prefer a role that gives him some ownership and control, similar to the position held by Toto Wolff at Mercedes. “Christian does not want to just be a team principal reporting to someone else,” the source added. “He is looking for something more like a partnership, where he can shape the direction of the team.”
One possible way back into the sport could be Alpine. According to De Telegraaf, a group of investors led by Horner is in talks to buy a stake in the team. Alpine has had a difficult 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship. The team has also ended its Renault engine programme and will switch to Mercedes power for 2026, which has fuelled speculation about a potential sale.
“Everything I see and everything I know, there is no truth in Christian coming to Alpine,” said Alpine Managing Director Steve Nielsen in October. “That does not mean it will not happen. This is Formula 1 after all.”
Alpine Executive Adviser Flavio Briatore is a long time friend of Horner, and that connection could play a role in any deal. Sources suggest that Horner is considering buying a controlling stake in the team alongside other investors, potentially giving him both ownership and operational influence. I
