After a tough run in Brazil and Las Vegas, Franco Colapinto looks ahead to the Qatar Grand Prix with confidence. Despite recent crashes, the Williams driver is focused on bouncing back and finishing the season strong during the final Sprint race at Lusail International Circuit.
The Williams team has faced tough weekends recently, particularly in Brazil. Both Franco Colapinto and Alex Albon crashed out during the rainy qualifying session. Albon's car couldn’t be repaired in time for the race, while Colapinto managed to start but later crashed out, bringing out the red flags after hitting the barriers during the race.
Another major incident occurred during qualifying in Las Vegas, where Colapinto escaped unharmed after a massive 50G crash.
When asked ahead of this weekend in Qatar whether these crashes might lead the team to question his potential, Colapinto confidently responded, “No, I’m showing what I can do. My confidence hasn’t dropped because of these incidents, and that’s what’s important,” he said. “I have full trust in myself and the team. We have two races left, and we’ll push all the way to Abu Dhabi to maximize our performance. Of course, the last two races didn’t go as planned, but before that, we had five great races.
“In Vegas, I felt very comfortable with the car and was putting in good laps during qualifying. Unfortunately, the final Q2 run was chaotic, pushing me to the limit and closer to the walls. I just went a bit too far. It’s all part of the learning process.”
Regarding whether the team’s limited resources affect his approach on track, Colapinto reflected: “There’s a time and place to consider that—thinking about parts and spares—but there are also moments where you just have to push the limits. In Vegas, I was cautious in practice sessions, but in qualifying, you have to take risks and get close to the walls. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out this time, but that’s motorsport.
“These challenges stay on your mind, especially when resources are tight, and the team is working hard to keep the cars prepared. This weekend, I won’t have the latest spec parts, but that’s the reality. We’ll keep pushing to make the most of what we have, and I know the team is giving their all.”
Looking ahead to the Qatar Grand Prix, which includes the season’s final Sprint race, Colapinto expressed his enthusiasm for racing here. He also highlighted the significance of Qatar for Argentina, which won the FIFA World Cup here in 2022.
“I’m very excited for the weekend here in Qatar,” he said. “It’s a special place for Argentinians because of the happiness our country experienced here. It’s an honor to race in Formula 1 and represent my nation. This will be a unique moment for me. I’ve fully recovered from Vegas, and while that weekend was tough, we’ve learned and are coming back stronger.
“We’ll need to quickly understand how the car performs here, especially since I’ll be running older front suspension components after the Vegas incident. With limited time during a Sprint weekend, it’ll be a challenge, but I’m confident we’ll adapt and get the most out of the car.”
