Formula 1 Kevin Magnussen

Former Formula 1 driver Kevin Magnussen will switch to NASCAR for the first time on June 21, when he joins Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 entry at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego.

Kevin Magnussen will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut driving Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 Chevrolet at the historic San Diego race held on an active U.S. military base.

The Danish driver, who raced in Formula 1 from 2014 to 2024 and started 185 Grands Prix, says he is excited to take on a completely new challenge in stock car racing.

“I’m incredibly excited and honored to have the opportunity to compete in NASCAR,” Magnussen said. “What Trackhouse and Justin Marks have done with Project 91 is unique, giving drivers from outside NASCAR a chance to compete at this level. I’m proud to be part of it.”

Magnussen enjoyed a long F1 career with McLaren, Renault and Haas, achieving a best result of second place on his debut at the 2014 Australian Grand Prix. Since leaving F1, he has also competed in sports car racing, including a win in IMSA competition in 2021.

He previously tested NASCAR machinery in 2022, describing the experience as completely different from Formula 1, saying it felt like learning to drive a race car from scratch.

Trackhouse Racing’s Project 91 programme is designed to bring international stars into NASCAR, and Magnussen will follow in the footsteps of drivers such as Shane van Gisbergen, Helio Castroneves and Kimi Räikkönen.
