Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has questioned whether Max Verstappen would actually be a good fit at Ferrari if the Dutchman ever decided to leave Red Bull Racing.
Verstappen’s future has become a major topic in the paddock amid concerns over Formula 1’s 2026 regulations and Red Bull’s drop in performance this season. Although there is no strong indication that a Ferrari move is being seriously pursued, Schumacher admitted he struggles to imagine the reigning world champion adapting to the Italian squad’s structure.
The German believes Verstappen is used to operating as the clear leader within a team environment built around him, something he may not find at Ferrari.
“Anything is conceivable. Many drivers really want to go to Ferrari, it's something very special for them," Schumacher said on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast
However, Schumacher suggested Verstappen would likely feel more comfortable elsewhere, particularly with a manufacturer like Mercedes.
“I think Max would feel very comfortable at Mercedes, as is the case in GT3 (Verstappen’s team uses Mercedes cars, note from the editor). Mercedes also always builds with top-class engines,” he said.
Schumacher also pointed to the fact Verstappen would not be surrounded by the same close circle of personnel that helped him dominate at Red Bull, especially after several key figures have already left the Milton Keynes-based team.
“So, I can't imagine it... Max would have to fit into Ferrari’s structure in a way that doesn’t really suit his character," Schumacher added.
