A group of exotic dancers in Montreal is threatening strike action over the Canadian Grand Prix weekend in a bid to pressure club owners over bar fees, overbooking and working conditions, aiming to leverage the busiest period of the year for maximum impact.
A group of exotic dancers in Montreal is threatening to go on strike during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend in an effort to increase pressure on nightclub owners over working conditions.
The Sex Work Autonomous Committee says the timing is deliberate, as the Formula 1 weekend brings the highest footfall and revenue of the year for local clubs, making it the most effective moment to push for change.
“We think the Grand Prix is the best time to strike,” the group said, arguing that clubs generate significantly higher profits during the event while dancers face worsening conditions, including higher bar fees, overbooking and stricter rules.
The group has raised concerns about daily “bar fees”, overbooking of performers and a lack of workplace protections. According to their claims, dancers are treated as independent contractors but are still subject to strict rules on scheduling, appearance and working practices, without the benefits normally associated with employment.
“The reality is that we’re clearly trapped in an employer/employee power dynamic, and the bar fee model benefits only the bosses,” the committee said, adding that safety concerns are often left to performers themselves.
