Max Verstappen will stay with Red Bull for the 2026 season, according to the team’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko.
After weeks of rumours linking Max Verstappen with a move to Mercedes, it now looks like he will stay with Red Bull for the 2026 Formula 1 season. According to Red Bull’s senior advisor Helmut Marko, the Dutch driver will remain with the team as the sport enters a new era of regulations.
Speaking to German media, Marko said he could “confirm” that Verstappen would be driving for Red Bull in 2026. This follows growing speculation that Verstappen could activate an exit clause in his contract and leave for Mercedes. The rumours picked up pace when George Russell mentioned that ongoing talks with Verstappen were affecting his own contract situation at Mercedes
However, the clause in Verstappen’s contract is now no longer active. It was tied to his position in the Drivers’ Championship after the Hungarian Grand Prix. Since Verstappen remains firmly in the top three, the exit option can no longer be used. Even so, Red Bull have made it clear they would not force Verstappen to stay if he truly wanted to go.
For now, all signs point to Verstappen staying put. He is said to be happy at Red Bull, especially with new team boss Laurent Mekies, who has brought fresh energy and a good relationship with the Dutchman. Verstappen has not yet made a public statement, but the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort could be the perfect place for that.
While Verstappen is already under contract until 2028, the big question is how competitive Red Bull will be under the new 2026 rules. If the team remains strong, Verstappen may see no reason to leave. But with such a big change coming, nothing is guaranteed and all eyes will be on how Red Bull perform once the new era begins.
