Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has admitted the team must react after rivals closed the gap in Miami, with the Silver Arrows set to introduce their first upgrade package of the 2026 Formula 1 season at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

After a strong start to the campaign, Mercedes no longer appear to hold the same clear advantage they enjoyed during the opening rounds. In Miami, both McLaren and Red Bull Racing brought significant developments, while Ferrari also looked more competitive throughout the weekend.

Even so, Mercedes remain on top in both championships. Rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli strengthened his lead in the drivers’ standings after taking victory in Miami, extending his advantage over team mate George Russell.

Looking ahead to Montreal and the second Sprint weekend of the season, Wolff confirmed that Mercedes will respond with new parts at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.

“Our competitors took a step forward in Miami and we need to respond. We bring our first update package of the year to Montreal, but we know that performance is only performance once it is delivered on track," said Wolff in the press release.

The Austrian also stressed that the season is still in its early stages despite the busy schedule ahead, with seven race weekends taking place before Formula 1’s summer shutdown.

“Despite being in the middle of May, we are just four races into the season. There is a long year ahead and, whilst this is an important weekend, it will not decide any outcomes," Wolff explained

Mercedes are hoping the upgrades can help them maintain their position at the front as the battle with McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari intensifies heading into the Canadian Grand Prix weekend.
