Formula 1 Aston Martin F1 2026 F1 season

Aston Martin is actively searching for a new team principal to work alongside Adrian Newey, who is currently leading the team on a temporary basis. According to PlanetF1, the process began in late 2025 and includes several high-profile candidates, with former McLaren boss Andreas Seidl emerging as the leading option.

Aston Martin is continuing its search for a new team principal to strengthen its leadership structure alongside Adrian Newey, who stepped into the role in November 2025. While Newey is currently overseeing the team, his appointment has always been viewed as a temporary solution, given his preference to focus on technical development rather than day-to-day management.

According to PlanetF1, the search process had already begun in late 2025, even before the team’s current on-track struggles became clear. Newey himself is leading the evaluation of potential candidates, working to identify a figure who can take over operational responsibilities while allowing him to concentrate on car performance and long-term technical direction.

The leadership reshuffle followed internal differences between Newey and Andy Cowell, whose expertise lies primarily in power units. Cowell has since moved into a role focused on overseeing the integration of Aston Martin’s new engine partnership with Honda and Aramco, a key area ahead of the 2026 regulations.

Several high-profile names have been linked to the position. Former McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has been approached, while Red Bull’s head of racing GianPiero Lambiase is understood to have declined an offer. Audi figures Mattia Binotto and Jonathan Wheatley have also been in discussions, although Binotto has reportedly rejected a move and Wheatley’s situation remains unresolved.

At present, former McLaren boss Andreas Seidl is believed to be the leading candidate. The German, who previously served as CEO of the Sauber Group, is currently not tied to a team and could therefore join without delay. This gives him an advantage over other candidates who would likely face extended gardening leave.

Another potential option is Christian Horner, whose agreed period away from Formula 1 is expected to end in the coming months, potentially making him available later in the season.

Aston Martin’s decision will be crucial as the team looks to establish a stable management structure under the new regulations. The goal is to create a clear division between technical leadership, led by Newey, and operational management under a dedicated team principal, as the team aims to improve its competitiveness throughout the 2026 season.
