Formula 1 F1 2025 F1 season F1 Las Vegas FIA McLaren oscarpiastri Lando Norris
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are under investigation after both McLaren cars were found to have excessive wear on their planks following the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
Norris finished second in the race, with Piastri crossing the line in fourth, giving the Briton an extended lead in the championship. Max Verstappen won the race after taking the lead at the first corner, but the post-race checks could have major implications for the McLaren drivers.
The FIA discovered that the rearmost skids on both MCL39s had worn more than the allowed limit. Planks are allowed a maximum wear of 1 mm from their original thickness, which must be 10 mm ± 0.2 mm when new. The rules state the minimum thickness after the race must be 9 mm, but both cars fell below this threshold.
Technical delegate Jo Bauer reported that the rearmost skids were measured according to the team’s legality documents, and both were found to be thinner than 9 mm. He referred the matter to the stewards for further consideration, which could lead to the disqualification of both Norris and Piastri.
If McLaren’s cars are disqualified, it would have a significant effect on the championship. Verstappen would tie with Piastri on 366 points, while the gap to Norris would be reduced to just 24 points with two races remaining in the season. The decision from the stewards is now eagerly awaited.
