How Pirelli prepares to take over MotoGP in 2027

In 2027, Pirelli will replace Michelin as the only tyre supplier in MotoGP. The Italian company is already testing new tyres and working with teams to be ready for the new 850cc bikes.

MotoGP is getting ready for a very big change in 2027. The championship will introduce new technical rules to make the racing safer and more exciting. The most talked-about change is that Michelin will stop supplying tyres to MotoGP. Pirelli will take over as the only tyre supplier. This will be a big step because Michelin has been in MotoGP for many years.

There will also be other changes. The engines will become smaller, moving from 1000cc to 850cc. This will reduce the speed a little, which could help the racing become closer and more competitive. Aerodynamic parts will also be reduced. Too much aero makes it hard for bikes to follow each other in corners and can make overtakes difficult. Devices that lower the motorcycle during acceleration, called ride-height devices, will also be removed.

Pirelli is working hard already. The company knows motorcycle racing very well because it supplies tyres to World Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3. However, MotoGP bikes are stronger and faster, so the job is more difficult. Pirelli held its first test in Misano in September. The conditions were perfect for gathering information. Riders used the new tyres without making many changes to the bike. Engineers could then understand how the tyres behaved at high speed and when the bike was leaned over in corners.

Pirelli planned another test after the Valencia Grand Prix, but it did not happen. There will be more testing in 2026, as the teams start working on the new 850cc bikes. Pirelli wants to be ready before the first race of 2027. The tyres they tested at Misano will be the starting point for future development.

Pirelli believes that riders will really like the front tyre. Riders who came from MotoGP to WorldSBK have said that the front Pirelli tyre gives excellent feeling and confidence. It tells the rider what the track is doing and helps them push harder into corners. Confidence in the front tyre is one of the most important things in racing.

Some riders already know Pirelli tyres from other championships. They may learn faster, but Pirelli believes MotoGP riders are very talented. They will not take long to understand how the tyres work. The more testing a rider does next year, the easier it will be when the new era begins.

Pirelli says safety and quality are the most important things at first. Every rider must receive tyres that feel the same and perform the same. The company makes many tyres in large batches, so the chance of receiving a bad tyre is very low. Pirelli has strong quality control and wants riders to trust the product fully.

Performance will still matter. In WorldSBK, Pirelli checks progress by looking at lap records. If lap times improve year by year, this means the tyres are working well. Pirelli wants to do the same in MotoGP.

Pirelli will manage its MotoGP work from Milan, where its Formula 1 office is also located. The MotoGP tyres will be built in Germany, where Pirelli produces all of its radial racing motorcycle tyres. The company will use knowledge from Formula 1, especially in data analysis and development processes. There will be a lot of information shared between the two motorsport programmes.

MotoGP still has two seasons before the new rules start. Teams, riders, and Pirelli must work closely together. They need to understand each other’s needs and make sure the tyres match the new bikes. The goal is to have safe tyres, strong grip, and good feeling for riders.

Many people are excited and a little nervous about this big change. But most agree that it is good for MotoGP to keep moving forward and improving. The 2027 season will be the start of a brand-new era for the sport.
