Pirelli is preparing to begin its journey as MotoGP's new tyre supplier with an initial test scheduled for September at Misano. This marks the first step in the Italian company's transition to replace Michelin in 2027, as it begins testing prototype compounds and working with manufacturers to gather performance feedback.
Pirelli is getting ready for their first MotoGP tyre test as they prepare to take over as the official tyre supplier in 2027. The test is scheduled to happen in September at the Misano circuit in Italy.
Starting in 2027, MotoGP will change its tyre supplier from Michelin to Pirelli. This is part of a larger update to the technical rules of the championship. Pirelli is already familiar with motorcycle racing, as it currently supplies tyres to Moto2 and Moto3, as well as other racing series like Formula 1 and World Superbikes.
Since the announcement in March, Pirelli has been busy developing its first MotoGP tyre compounds. The company is now ready to test them on track and get feedback from the riders.
Originally, the first test was supposed to take place after the Aragon Grand Prix at Motorland, but it was cancelled due to various problems. Now, Pirelli plans to run the test on Tuesday, September 16, at Misano, just two days after the San Marino GP and one day after the official IRTA test on Monday at the same track.
For the first test, each manufacturer will provide one test rider (five in total), along with a special test bike. These bikes are built to match the 2027 bikes as closely as possible. That means they will have 1000cc engines, no ride-height devices, simple aerodynamics, and about 40–50 horsepower less than current bikes.
Pirelli will pay for all the costs of this first test. There was some disagreement earlier about who would pay for future tests. Pirelli agreed to cover the first one, but after that, the teams are expected to pay the costs. This caused some tension, especially because the 2026 tests will be more frequent and involve full-time race riders. However, the teams and Pirelli have reportedly reached an agreement, though the exact details are still private.
The goal of the test is to try out different tyre compounds that Pirelli has designed and to gather as much information as possible to improve the tyres.
