Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has strongly hit back at rival teams amid questions over the legality of the team’s 2026 power unit.
Some manufacturers have raised concerns about a possible “compression ratio trick” under the new engine rules, but Wolff insists Mercedes has done nothing wrong and says the FIA fully supports its position.
For the new season, Formula 1’s power unit rules have reduced the compression ratio from 18:1 to 16:1. The compression ratio can only be checked when the car is at ambient temperature in the pit lane. Reports suggested Mercedes may have found a way to run the engine at a higher level once on track, which could offer a performance advantage. Meetings have taken place to discuss the issue, but Wolff says the rules are clear.
“I just don't understand why some teams concentrate more on the others and keep arguing a case that is very clear and transparent,” Wolff said, quoted by RacingNews365. He added that Mercedes’ talks with the governing body had been positive, saying: “Communication with the FIA was very positive all along. It's not only on compression ratio but on other things too.” Wolff stressed that the regulations and checks are well defined, both in F1 and in other forms of motorsport.
Mercedes also enjoyed a strong shakedown in Barcelona last week, completing 500 laps over three days, more than any other team. With the season approaching, the Brackley-based team is seen by many as an early favourite, with further running to come at pre-season testing in Bahrain.
Wolff made it clear he wants rivals to focus on their own work instead of questioning Mercedes. “So just get your shit together,” he said bluntly. He criticised what he described as “secret meetings” and “secret letters”, adding that Mercedes is trying to “minimise distractions” by focusing on its own performance rather than others.
