It was a hot and breezy afternoon in Mexico City, with the air temperature around 26°C, the track surface reaching 52°C, and a light wind of 9 km/h blowing across the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

At the start, most of the top ten drivers chose soft tyres, while both Red Bulls and Isack Hadjar started on the medium compound. Lando Norris made a perfect getaway from pole position and immediately had to defend from both Ferrari drivers. Max Verstappen attacked aggressively into the first corner, making contact with Charles Leclerc before running wide. Leclerc also went off but briefly took the lead before giving the position back to Norris.

After two laps, the order was Norris, Leclerc, Hamilton, Verstappen, Russell, Bearman, Antonelli, Tsunoda, Piastri, and Ocon. Liam Lawson pitted early to change his front wing. A few laps later, Norris was already pulling away, building a gap of more than one and a half seconds over the Ferraris.

Chaos returned in the first sector when Verstappen tried to overtake Hamilton. Both drivers went off the track, and Oliver Bearman took advantage of the confusion to move up to fourth place. Soon after, Lawson retired from the race, and Hamilton was investigated for gaining an advantage by leaving the circuit.

On lap sixteen, Hamilton received a ten-second penalty for that incident. Carlos Sainz was the first driver to make a scheduled stop, switching from mediums to softs. Norris continued to dominate at the front, extending his lead to over eight seconds from Leclerc, while Piastri was struggling to match his teammate’s pace.

Hamilton served his penalty on lap twenty-four, fitted medium tyres, and rejoined in fourteenth place. Bearman and Piastri stopped soon after, followed by George Russell. Sainz then received another penalty, this time five seconds for speeding in the pit lane, and reported an issue with his pit limiter.

Bearman continued his impressive drive, overtaking Hadjar for fifth and later Tsunoda for fourth. Norris pitted on lap thirty-four for medium tyres and kept the lead without losing time. Shortly after, Fernando Alonso retired from the race.

Verstappen stopped around lap thirty-eight for soft tyres and returned to the track in eighth place, about thirty-five seconds behind Norris. George Russell began complaining about team orders over the radio, and eventually, Andrea Kimi Antonelli was told to let him pass.

By lap forty-six, Norris was leading comfortably by over twenty seconds ahead of Leclerc. Piastri, who had been stuck behind the Mercedes drivers, came in for soft tyres on lap forty-eight, together with Antonelli and Hamilton. The McLaren pit crew performed an excellent stop, allowing Piastri to rejoin ahead of Hamilton in seventh place.

Bearman and Russell made their final stops a couple of laps later, both switching to softs. Russell had to fight hard to stay in front of Esteban Ocon, who then fell back behind Piastri and Antonelli.

Leclerc was told that his pace was good enough to reach the end without another pit stop. Bearman managed to pull away from Russell, putting himself out of DRS range. Carlos Sainz’s difficult afternoon got worse when he received a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane again and later retired from the race.

In the final laps, Verstappen started closing in on Leclerc, cutting the gap from six seconds to less than two. At the same time, Bearman was still defending bravely against Piastri for fourth place.

With only two laps remaining, yellow flags appeared when Sainz stopped in the final sector, and the Virtual Safety Car was deployed. Verstappen was just three tenths behind Leclerc, but when the race resumed halfway through the last lap, there was not enough time to attack.

Lando Norris crossed the line to take a dominant victory at the Mexico City Grand Prix and the lead in the championship. Charles Leclerc held on to second place by a tiny margin ahead of Max Verstappen in third. Oliver Bearman finished an outstanding fourth, followed by Oscar Piastri in fifth. Mercedes duo Kimi Antonelli and George Russell ended the race in sixth and seventh respectively. Lewis Hamilton managed only eight, while Esteban Ocon secured ninth for Haas. Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten.
