Aprilia wants Miguel Oliveira to join its MotoGP testing programme next year, but the plan depends on approval from BMW. The Portuguese rider has signed to race for BMW in the World Superbike Championship in 2026, yet both teams could work out a deal allowing him to test for Aprilia while racing in Superbikes.
Aprilia would like to have Miguel Oliveira as part of their MotoGP testing team next year, but if they want to do so, they will need approval from BMW.
After losing his Pramac seat for 2026, Oliveira accepted a factory seat with BMW in the World Superbike Championship, where he will team up with former MotoGP rider Danilo Petrucci.
Aprilia had offered him a test role to help develop their bike, but Oliveira chose to continue competing regularly.
Still, Aprilia is open to the idea of a dual role for Oliveira in 2026 if BMW allows it.
This season, Aprilia has struggled with a lack of riders. Jorge Martin was out for most of the 2025 season due to injuries, and Lorenzo Savadori has had to fill in for some of the races. Meanwhile, Ai Ogura missed the last two rounds with a hand injury.
At the Indonesian GP, Massimo Rivola, CEO of Aprilia Racing, spoke about their situation:
“I would prefer to have a bit more luck in crashes, but if these are the statistics maybe we need some more [riders].”
“This year, Sava did some tests but he was racing [most of the time],” he told Motorsport.com.
When asked if working with Oliveira might clash with his BMW contract, he said:
“Since he signed with BMW, we need to ask BMW first. From our side, [we would be happy], we will see.”
Oliveira is open to the option of combining his WSBK career with a MotoGP test role, but only if it fits with BMW’s permission and the WSBK season schedule.
Speaking after the Indonesian GP, he told Crash.net:
“For me that’s an option. For sure, it’s something to see with BMW first. The priority is to race, of course, but how things could be done in terms of calendar… Aprilia wants to take full advantage of having me testing their bike… it’s not easy to come up with a schedule that fits everyone.”
He was also asked whether BMW allowing a rider to test for a rival in MotoGP might undermine BMW’s future ambitions, to which he replied to Crash.net:
“Why not? I think their intentions in motorsport are pretty clear.”
Oliveira is a perfect choice for Aprilia, as he already has past experience with the brand, having raced for RNF Racing (now known as Trackhouse Racing) in 2023 and 2024.
