The organisers of the Brazilian Grand Prix have acted quickly after a series of crashes during the sprint race at Interlagos. Heavy rain on Friday night had left water trapped in the kerbs at Turn 3. During the sprint, this water caused several drivers to lose control of their cars.

To prevent similar problems on race day, organisers worked overnight to create a simple but effective solution. According to The Race, used a concrete floor saw to cut a drainage channel along the kerbs. This channel is designed to guide water off the track and onto the grass, helping the surface dry faster and making it safer for the drivers.

The chain of incidents began on lap six when race leader Lando Norris ran wide on the Turn 3 kerb. The wet kerb threw water into the air, creating a slippery surface for the drivers behind him. Norris’s team-mate, Oscar Piastri, was the first to be affected. He lost control and spun into the barriers. Moments later, Nico Hulkenberg and Franco Colapinto also hit the wall after struggling with the same wet patch. The race had to be stopped so that the cars could be removed and the damaged barriers repaired.

Piastri admitted that he probably should not have been on the kerb at that moment. He explained that the track conditions had changed since the previous lap, and that other drivers ahead may have carried extra water onto the kerb. Colapinto described the situation as a “chain reaction,” with each car making the conditions worse for the next driver.

The series of crashes highlighted how tricky the Turn 3 kerbs had become after the rain, especially with the track design directing water into that area. And while the forecast for race day predicts dry conditions, the organisers want to make sure the Turn 3 kerbs are safe in case of rain. This careful work should help avoid the kind of problems seen during the sprint and keep the race safer for all the drivers.
