Honda will test its 2027 MotoGP prototype for the first time at the Sepang International Circuit this week, as it aims to become a dominant force in the championship once again.

After KTM became the first manufacturer to debut its new 850cc engine at Jerez earlier this month, Honda will be the second manufacturer to present its 2027 bike, using Pirelli tyres, on Wednesday. The Japanese manufacturer’s test and development team will travel to Malaysia to complete two days of running at Sepang on Wednesday and Thursday.

During these two days, Honda will put its 2027 engine on track for the first time, with former LCR Honda rider Takaaki Nakagami in charge of riding duties.

MotoGP is set for a major technical overhaul in 2027. The championship will switch to 850cc engines, reduce aerodynamics and remove ride height devices as part of a completely new set of regulations. These changes will also mark the arrival of Pirelli as MotoGP’s sole tyre supplier, replacing Michelin.

Although Honda remains fully focused on developing its 2026 bike, led by Aleix Espargaro, the team has now begun work on a parallel programme. This includes a new 850cc engine fitted into a base bike and running on Pirelli tyres currently under development for MotoGP’s 2027 debut.

According to Motorsport.com, the bike used for the test will be a modified 2026 version. It will not have ride height devices, will feature reduced aerodynamics and will run on Pirelli tyre compounds.

For now, Nakagami will lead development of the 2027 bike, while Espargaro continues to focus on the 2026 machine. Midway through the 2026 season, once the new bike is at a more advanced stage, the Spanish rider will take over leadership of the project.

Pirelli has offered tyres and technical support to manufacturers willing to begin early testing with its MotoGP tyres. So far, only KTM and Honda have accepted the offer, although other manufacturers are expected to follow from February onwards.

Pirelli is also planning two tests in 2026 using 2027 spec bikes and full-time MotoGP riders, scheduled for June and September.

In addition to Honda’s MotoGP test team, the manufacturer’s World Superbike squad will also be present at Sepang. However, it will not be allowed to use race bikes or race riders. Due to an injury to its new test rider and six-time World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea, British rider Ryan Vickers is expected to take part in the test.
